Pyrography Overview
Pyrography is the technique of decorating wood or other materials by burning marks into the surface, using heat instead of ink or blade. Its roots stretch back to ancient civilizations that used fire-heated tools to burn designs into wood and gourds, and it later grew into a distinct decorative art in Victorian England, where the tool then in use, a poker heated by an oil lamp, gave the craft its old name: pokerwork.
Pyrography 101: The Basics of the Art of Burning Things
No experience needed. Get to know the basics of wood, find a piece that speaks to you, and learn to control a burn. You’ll leave with a finished piece you burned yourself.

- Heat control: clean lines and smooth shading
- Transferring a design to wood
- How to burn a design into a keychain, bookmark, coaster, or ornament to take home. You choose.
